Canada has long been a top choice for international students, thanks to its welcoming society, high-quality education, and opportunities to work or immigrate after graduation.
However, to maintain the program’s sustainability and protect students from potential exploitation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced new regulations effective November 15, 2024.
Key Changes:
- Off-Campus Work Hours: International students can now work up to 24 hours per week off campus during their academic sessions. This adjustment aims to balance work opportunities with academic commitments.
- Changing Institutions: Students must apply for and receive approval for a new study permit before transferring to a different designated learning institution (DLI). This measure ensures better oversight and program integrity.
- DLI Compliance: DLIs are required to submit compliance reports to IRCC, confirming the enrollment status of their international students. Failure to comply may result in suspension from accepting new international students for up to a year.
Implications for Students:
- Work Opportunities: The increase to 24 hours per week allows students to gain more work experience and support themselves financially, while still prioritizing their studies.
- Institution Transfers: The new requirement for a study permit when changing institutions emphasizes the importance of careful planning and commitment to chosen programs.
- Institution Accountability: DLIs are now more accountable for their international students, ensuring a supportive and compliant educational environment.
These changes reflect Canada’s commitment to providing a positive and successful experience for international students, while maintaining the integrity of its educational programs.
